IFTM takes to the ocean wave to promote exchanges within Greater Bay Area

中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

IFTM was among the partners in the Classroom at Sea programme held from March 22 to 24, 2019 on board a cruise ship, the World Dream, at sea off Hong Kong.

The Macao SAR Higher Education Bureau and the Partners Education Foundation, a Hong Kong charity, jointly arranged the programme.

The scheme was meant to prompt exchanges within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and inspire people to work in the tourism industry. It was an occasion for students and their lecturers to learn and teach in an unusual environment. The programme covered topics including maritime tourism, service on ships, staff management, cruise facility management, cruise catering management and cruise entertainment management.

Each institution of higher education in the Greater Bay Area was offered places in the programme for 2 of its students. The Macao SAR Higher Education Bureau collected the applications of the Macao students sent to attend, and IFTM collected the fees charged for their attendance.

The students toured the various facilities on board the World Dream to find out how a cruise ship works. The captain gave a talk on managing crews and on the working environment on ships.

The students were enthusiastic about the experience, asking about the cruise industry and about career opportunities.

IFTM Assistant Professor Dr. Cindia Lam gave a talk on the opportunities maritime tourism offers and the challenges it poses. Dr. Lam talked about the changes taking place in the tourism and hospitality industries, and about the features, development and approach to service of the maritime tourism industry in particular.
