IFTM team excels in Greater Bay Area business presentation contest

中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

A team from IFTM’s English Speech and Debate Society finished second in the finals of the 10th “Shangjiao” Business Presentation Contest. The event for higher education students in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was held at the City University of Macau on November 8.

The event was organised by the Linguistic Society of Macao and had a theme of “green city”.

IFTM was represented by Sofia Lam Huang, Eva Lin Yihua, Sisy Long Xinyun and Gavin Mak Chon Wan, all students pursuing bachelor’s degrees. Their preparation was supported by IFTM Lecturers Mr. Wilson Hong Cheong Hin and Ms. Rachel Peralta. Mr. Hong and Ms. Peralta are also moderators of the IFTM English Speech and Debate Society.

The business proposal by the IFTM team focused on ways of reducing plastic waste in Macao. The students put forward a business plan involving the establishment of a floating museum and the development of a mobile phone application for recycling, called EVRecycle. Among the various aspects of the proposal were marine pollution monitoring, public education, the use of social networking data, processing used plastic, and trading in various sorts of recycled plastic for use as raw materials.

After a 15-minute presentation of their business proposal, which included a demonstration of the EVRecycle app, the IFTM team answered questions about their project posed by other contestants.

The organisers say the purpose of the “Shangjiao” Business Presentation Contest is to encourage students in institutions of tertiary education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to develop their creative thinking, to hone their business and communication skills, and to improve their command of business English. The expectation is that students who take part will broaden their horizons, enhance their competitiveness in the labour market, and improve their career prospects.
