Step forward, would-be casino managers

中文摘要 / Summary in Chinese

Part of the mission of IFT is to ensure it gives its students enough tools for them to become successful professionals in tourism or hospitality. As casinos are an important part of the operations of integrated resorts in Macao and in other places in Asia, the Institute offers an elective course in casino/gaming management. The course is open to students in all programmes leading to bachelor’s degrees, except the Culinary Arts Management Programme.

IFT Visiting Assistant Professor Dr. Jack Ly, who teaches the course, says: “The syllabus of the casino/gaming management course focuses on a general understanding of gaming industry development, operation and management issues.” Dr. Ly says the course is meant to give students operating skills and managerial vision.

Students taking the course are required to learn how to run several casino table games. At the end of the course, they will be familiar with popular casino games including baccarat, sic bo, roulette and several variants of poker.

Groups of students taking the casino/gaming management course in academic year 2016/17 were given an assignment to draw up a development plan for an integrated resort. The plan was meant to cover gaming facilities, hotel accommodation and amusement areas.

Dr. Ly says each group had to consider several matters in drawing up its plan, including the site, the theme, capital spending, market analysis, operations and risk. The purpose of the exercise was to hone the managerial abilities of the students, he says.

The elective course in casino/gaming management is popular among exchange students doing a stint at IFT. They see it as a chance to learn special skills during their stay at the Institute.
